November 2020 Website Meeting

Notes

Mask-wearing survey

We began the meeting by discussing the mask-wearing survey that is currently being conducted by the school in coordination with the C.D.C. The news stories that have been put out related to this have included table graphics displaying survey data, but Nikky says that this was only meant to be an interim solution and that she was hoping to make something that showed the findings in a snazzier fashion. Unfortunately, the study is towards the end of its seven-week timeline, with the current phase of the study set to end on November 22. However, there have been discussions to continue the study into the spring.

“Who We Are” adjustments

A brief discussion was held about the “Who We Are” section of the site, mainly to highlight that some adjustments have been made to allow for easier data entry and content creation for that section.

“Discover” campaign page updates

Last week, Nikky reached out to the web team in our Slack channel to figure out how to go about updating the content on the “Discover” campaign page that was launched a couple of years ago. Some of the changes that Nikky is looking to be made to the page include changing the highlighted profiles, updating photography that’s in use throughout the page, and updating the recruiter’s photo and information, among other things. It was also discovered that the social media icons were broken as a result of some other technical updates that were recently made to the school’s website.

This page’s copy is considered “static”, meaning that the content is baked into the templates and not able to be modified by logging into Umbraco. In order to have changes made to the page, we would either need to spend a good deal of time making the page editable in Umbraco or the desired changes could be sent to Jason and the web team so that they could be manually made. This latter option is the route we’re going with at this time.

Nikky indicated that the list changes for the content should be coming soon. A concern of hers was the fact that the school has ordered postcards with the U.R.L. of the “Discover” page on them, and she wanted to make sure that the page could actually be updated so that she wouldn’t need to resort to creating another page at a different U.R.L. She also asked what kind of timeline can expected for making these changes, and Jason believes that it should only take a day or two to complete, assuming the updates are mainly content- and not structure-focused.

Video on Occupational Medicine page

Jessica and the school have produced a video that highlights the Occupational Medicine Residency program. The video has thus far been included in a companion news story, but Nikky says the school would also like to include that same video somewhere on the program’s page. With the program’s page being somewhat content-heavy, Nikky would like to have the video appear “above the fold”. After further discussion, the group thought it would be best to place the video after the initial two introductory paragraphs, and before the section that begins with the “Program Overview” heading.

The best way to achieve this is to make use of the Embedded Video macro. However, up until this meeting the ability to use the Embedded Video macro (and any other type of macro) in this part of the program page was not available. The web team will look to adjust those restrictions.

Student profiles

We discussed gathering information for new student profiles. Dave was asked about what the process looks like for getting new students into the system. Dave said that what he needs initially is simply names and email addresses of potential students to feature. He would then use something like a Wufoo form to schedule out times for photography shoots of the students. He wants to utilize the STEPS lab right now and through the end of the semester, as it is not used as much during this time of the year. His goal is to bank as many student profiles as possible in order to be able to use them throughout the upcoming months, regardless of the state of the campus as it relates to the pandemic and whether or not students are going to be available going forward.

Virtual tour update

Nikky asked for an update on the virtual tour that the campus is putting together. Dave said that the project is progressing, and that the person who has been capturing the panoramic photography has been adding more locations to Google Maps for the tour to utilize. Nothing is needed from the school, at this point.

Updates to Coronavirus section

Dave reminded Nikky and everyone that the details on the “Coronavirus” page should be updated as frequently as possible, especially as it pertains to the plans for the spring semester, as some students may be on campus, while others may not be. He would like the content to focus on unique requirements that the school has for their operating plans that may differ from the information being put out by the university-level resources, like “Return to Campus”. It should also be noted that following our meeting the orange Coronavirus information bar was updated on all of the school websites to match the language used on the main WVU website.
