May 2021 Website Meeting

Notes

Spatial Epidemiology and Statistics Lab page update

Brian has sent along some example imagery he would like to use for the new lab pages on the website. After looking over those images, Shawn says that he thinks that they are pretty complex and not very ideal to just throw into Umbraco for the site. Ideally, they need some supporting content to explain them. He suggests building out sections for the shaded maps that were a part of this collection.

Nikky seemed to agree, saying we need for context for the images, and there isn’t much intention to just have those images serve as content unto themselves. She thinks that maybe she should contact Aira to see if she could transform some of the graphics to make them more digestible. He also suggests making a backpage utilizing the maps to give a better sense of a design direction things could be taken in.

Shawn also asks if some sort of lead-in statement could be developed to set up what the maps and graphics represent, or a way to “soften” it up front. It’d be ideal to explain more of what is the goal behind the data and why was it collected in the first place. This will help to better understand what’s going on before diving into the raw data. Nikky says she will ask Brian to “widen the lens” a bit, and she will talk with Aira about some graphic directions to take.

Shawn mentioned it’s very important to think about the graphics and maps from a standpoint of people who may not be able to visually see or understand them. What is a map or graphic attempting to describe? These are important ideas to keep in mind as content is continued to be developed for this section.

Ultimately, with the imagery provided, Shawn thinks we could have more of concept that could sent to Nikky and then ultimately shared with Aira.

Mask study page

We briefly touched on the Mask study section of the site. It was decided that the summary paragraph on the spring results page should be updated to include a link to get back to the fall results.

Updates on new program pages

Nikky says some changes for the new program pages are ready but are not yet live, as she is waiting on an okay from the admissions folks. She says she is hoping to go live soon. She also says that WVU Online is ready for it all to go live on May 19 so that it may be presented as being in sync with them and their site. Shawn says he will take a look.

Redirects for old department pages

For the department pages that will be replaced by these new program pages, Nikky was wondering there is a possibility to set up the old URLs to redirect to the new pages. Shawn says as the school is ready this can be set up. Since the page is technically live, he can contact our systems team to set up those redirects to be in place.

Nikky then wondered if the old pages will still be available on the backend once this all occurs. Shawn says not forever. What will happen is a deadline will be set, and past that deadline the culture and hostname properties on these department pages will be removed.

Updates on I.C.R.C.

Shawn says that he has contacted the folks at I.C.R.C. about transitioning to their new site and they seemed fine with everything. He says we will be taking the old site offline and bringing the Health version of the site online, and that he will let Jessica know when this happens. Jessica mentioned a few places on the Public Health site that point to the current I.C.R.C. site that will need to be updated, and Shawn says that we’ll look through search logs for any missed references.

Commencement profiles

With commencement ceremonies a little over a week away, Jessica let us know that right now all of the school’s commencement profiles are published but are hidden from navigation. She says that they will be replacing all of the students on the “Who We Are” section to be only graduating students for a few weeks, most likely through the remainder of May and into Memorial Day. She says that they have about eight graduates that they are profiling, and some include audio and video. Nikky also mentioned that some profiles are from graduates of the 2020 class.

Shawn informed everyone that the plan is for profiles to be pulled into the Commencement website on Monday. In order for this to work, essentially a “token” needs to be added to the server. This will require that the site be taken down for a brief period, which should only last roughly 60–90 seconds. Nikky asked about a more specific time frame for when this might take place, so that she can give a heads-up to their people. Shawn says that it’ll depend on when some coordination can occur to make the change happen but she should assume this will all take place between 1:30–2:00.
