7/9/19 Meeting

Notes

What We Discussed

As this would be our last meeting with Kim before she left, she wanted to relay what her priorities and hopes are to continue on once the new person is here.

  • Students Page - While we have talked about doing a full-scale redesign of this page in the future, in the interim, Kim was looking for something to better emphasize the Student Resources. We previously agreed to add it as a feature button, but after doing so it doesn't really feel like it's enough. Shawn suggested we could perhaps sort of "merge" the Now Student Resources bar with the Programs bar. Basically it would still have the four program choices, then some sort of division, then the student resources links. We also suggested adding a "Resident Resources" link now that that has been created.  We all agreed that this seemed like a great interim idea and would move forward with it.
  • Student Resources Page -
    • Student Handbooks - We discussed the changes to this page we had talked about in the past. As we began this conversation, we let Kim know that it was actually done and ready for her, we just hadn't let her know yet. Kim wanted to pivot a bit and make it Student Handbooks and Policies. After we talked this through and she did some thinking, Kim ultimately felt that she liked the way the Student Handbooks was separated out for the different audiences. We also agreed to make the title dynamic if it isn't already.
    • Career Development / Policies - Kim would like to change the "Career Development" block verbiage in the gray bar. She also would like to remove Awards and Scholarships from there and replace it with Policies. We talked about making it three column, but acknowledged that it would be two "3 column bars" back-to-back which was too much. We agreed to leave it as two column and make the titles dynamic if they aren't already.
    • Awards and Scholarships - Lastly we needed to find a new place for these. We struggled to find a place to resituate these that felt organic. We proposed using a style utilized on the ICRC website ("Highlighted Research" bar) to situate these, rather than stuff them somewhere inorganic. We also considered changing the contact card to widget which would highlight a particular award/scholarship. She said she would prefer to keep the contact card and will instead let her people know she needs a contact.
    • General Reordering - Based on the changes above, Kim would like the order to be
      1. Gray two-column bar (Career Development / Policies)
      2. Student Handbooks (new)
      3. Get Involved
      4. Awards and Scholarships (new)
      5. Additional Resources
      6. Commencement bar
  • Strategic Planning - Kim has still not been given any content for this. She said she is going to list it as high priority for the new person.
  • Overall Program Pages - Kim explained that CPASS recently released a suspiciously Public-Health-like degree. This has caused a bit of hub-bub within Public Health. Kim's people feel that, while our current Program Pages/Student Pages have a lot of content similar to this, it is not laid out as visually nice and is not as centralized. We had a lengthy discussion about how Public Health is pretty unique to the other schools in that it does not have a wait list. It is a newer school with new programs and they are actively trying to recruit students in a way that the other schools don't necessarily need to do (or do it in the same way). While we didn't put together any "solution" or plan, Kim just wanted to bring it to our attention as she knew it would likely come up in the future. We definitely can see how our pages are not providing content in the best way, and it's absolutely worth discussing and rehashing.
  • Career Paths - Kim wants to further showcase this in the website. As we talked about a lot of other Students focused content, we realized this would likely become something that happens along with any other changes we make for those.
  • Job Board - We let Kim know that we would move forward with these changes she requested.
